Celebrate Science 2026 returns to Locomotion

Durham University's free family science festival, Celebrate Science, is back this October half term, returning to Locomotion in Shildon for two days of hands-on discovery, experimentation and family fun.

Families are invited along between Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29 October 2026, from 10am to 4pm.

Celebrate Science is an inclusive, interactive and inspiring event that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together to explore the wonders of science.

Through engaging activities, creative challenges and live demonstrations, the festival encourages curiosity, sparks imagination and showcases the exciting world of research and discovery.

This year's programme features a wide range of hands-on activities delivered by Durham University researchers, students and partner organisations.

Visitors can explore everything from space and the natural world to engineering, health, technology and the environment through interactive exhibits, demonstrations and experiments designed for all ages.

Families can meet real scientists, discover cutting-edge research and enjoy opportunities to create, test, build and explore together.

From investigating how our world works to imagining the innovations of the future, Celebrate Science offers something for everyone.

The event will also showcase the enthusiasm and creativity of local school Science Ambassadors who will be sharing their own activities and helping inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.

Now in its 15th year, Celebrate Science has welcomed thousands of visitors from across the North East and beyond, creating opportunities for communities to engage with science in fun, accessible and meaningful ways.

Paula Street, Durham University's Senior Science Engagement Specialist, said: “We are thrilled to welcome everyone to Celebrate Science 2026 and invite them to immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere that makes this event so special, while enjoying sharing a day together filled with wonder, curiosity, and inspiring experiences.”

Sarah Price, Head of Locomotion, said: “Celebrate Science is one of the highlights of our autumn programme, bringing together families, researchers and community partners for three days of exploration and hands-on fun.

“There's something special about seeing young people discover a new idea, try an experiment or ask a question that sparks their imagination.

“We're proud to host an event that makes science accessible, engaging and inspiring for visitors of all ages.”

Celebrate Science 2026 is a partnership between Durham University and Locomotion, part of the Science Museum Group.
