Durham City Hosts It's First Major Irish Dancing Competition

The city of Durham is set to showcase its vibrant cultural spirit this Spring as it hosts the inaugural O’Hehir Championships – the first event of its kind in the area.

The city of Durham is set to showcase its vibrant cultural spirit this Spring as it
hosts the inaugural O’Hehir Championships – the first event of its kind in the
area – on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May 2025 at the acclaimed
Sunderland Live, previously known as Rainton Arena.

With over 400 dancers expected from across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, the
O’Hehir Championships promise to deliver a spectacular two-day celebration
of Irish culture, tradition, and world-class talent. From beginners to seasoned
champions, performers of all ages will take to the stage in a variety of
categories and age groups.

Saturday will feature Open Championships (Under 10 to Senior), judged by a
prestigious panel of six adjudicators. Sunday will welcome grade competitions,
under 5-9 Open Championships, and Preliminary Championships, judged by
expert three-person panels.

One of the weekend’s highlights is the charming Tiny Tots Competition,
offering Durham’s youngest Irish dancers the chance to experience the
spotlight, with teacher support allowed and a special award for every
participant. The event will also include a Freestyle Competition with all entry
fees donated to local cancer charity, Solan Conner Fawcett Family Cancer
Trust.

The event is organised by County Durham’s own Katrina O’Hehir ADCRG – a
former World Championships finalist and lead dancer in Michael Flatley’s Lord
of the Dance. Katrina has toured internationally and now runs the award-
winning O’Hehir School of Irish Dance in Spennymoor.

Her school has produced British National, Great Britain, and Regional
champions, along with a Globe holder. As a qualified adjudicator and recipient
of the Global Excellence in Teaching Award, Katrina’s passion and expertise are
at the heart of this exciting new event.

“This is more than a dance event – it’s a celebration of community, culture,
and achievement,” said organiser Katrina O’Hehir. “We’re incredibly proud to
bring something of this scale to Durham and can’t wait to welcome dancers
and families from near and far to experience the magic of Irish dance in the
North East.”
