A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting at a car wash. The incident took place at Lanchester Hand Car Wash on Monday (August 11) just before 7:30 p.m.

Police believe a car pulled into the car wash's forecourt where four men were already present. A passenger from the car allegedly fired shots before the vehicle drove away. A man in his 50s was injured with pellets to his chest, face, forehead, and eye. He was treated by paramedics at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

Following the incident, firearms officers located and arrested a man in his 20s. He is currently in police custody.

As of Tuesday, the A691 road between Consett and Lanchester remains closed for a police investigation, with a cordon in place across from St Bede’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College. Investigators and forensic teams have been working at the scene.

Durham Police are asking for the public's help. A spokesperson said, "Officers would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the area at the time. If you have any information, call 101 quoting incident reference number 437 of August 11, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The A691 is expected to stay closed until police finish their work. Drivers are being advised to use a diversion via Maiden Law and Howden Bank.
