New College Durham has officially opened its new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) — a £4.5 million investment designed to transform sporting and community opportunities for students and residents across County Durham.

The official opening ceremony welcomed a host of distinguished guests, including the Mayor of Durham, Councillor Gary Hutchinson, former Sunderland AFC legend Kevin Phillips, civic leaders, and partners from across construction, education, and sport. The event marks the start of an exciting new chapter for activity, learning, and community engagement in the region.

| The state-of-the-art facility features: |
| · An all-weather pitch built to FA and Sport England standards |
| · The redevelopment of 4.55 hectares, including new car parks, landscaping, and an attenuation pond to enhance drainage and biodiversity |
|
· 20 new electric vehicle charging points, supporting sustainable travel
|
|
This latest development is part of the college’s extensive capital strategy which has already seen over £34 million invested in facilities and advanced equipment, in New College Durham, over the last five years.

Local clubs already confirmed to use the new MUGA include Durham Women FC, Belmont United, Durham FC, Durham Athletic, Durham United and Shincliffe Juniors. The MUGA will also be central to the college’s Football Development Centre, run in partnership with the Newcastle United Foundation and Spennymoor Town FC.

Kevin Phillips, attending on behalf of Sunderland AFC’s official charity, the Foundation of Light, praised the collaboration between sport and education in creating opportunities for the next generation. The Foundation works closely with New College Durham delivering education, skills, and community programmes that make a lasting impact across the region.

With over 900 11-a-side adult teams — including more than 70 women’s teams — active across County Durham, the new facility reinforces the county’s position as a powerhouse for grassroots and women’s football.
