Beauty Spot: Whistle Crag (Near Middleton-in-Teesdale)


Easily accessed viewing point with stunning and wide-reaching views across Teesdale. Ideal
spot to capture the North Pennines National Landscape including drystone walls, scattered
settlements and open fell land to the far horizon. Added interest in the form of the outdoor
sculpture “Air” (known locally as the “feather” sculpture) by artist Victoria Brailsford.

Attraction: Durham University Oriental Museum
Explore Ancient Egypt and Western Asia, the Himalayas, China, Japan, Korea and
Southeast Asia all in one museum. The Oriental Museum is devoted to the art and
archaeology of the great cultures of North Africa and Asia. Objects on display range in date
from prehistoric to contemporary art works. Visitors can see ancient Egyptian mummies,
Chinese porcelain created for the imperial court, Japanese woodblock prints and head-
hunting swords from Borneo.
