Meet Chris
I like to think of 60s on Sunday as a little step back in time to the days of the great pirate radio stations, broadcasting revolutionary music. To me, the 1960s represent a time when music in the UK was evolving in overdrive, in a way that would change pop music forever. I was born about 30 years too late to have been around to experience it myself, but I like to imagine (and I invite you to do the same) what it was like hearing these groundbreaking songs for the first time.

What brought you to radio? 

My sister and I had a double-tape deck karaoke machine with two microphones when we were little. We worked out how to plug a CD player in with an aux cable, so we started making radio shows together, recording them onto tape just for fun. We called it Kaleidoscope FM. 

 What do you love about the north east? 

I was born and lived in Consett until I was 18. My happiest times growing up were when I got to be involved in making music and art, and the northeast provided that in abundance. I first got into amateur dramatics through Margaret Darroch’s Consett Theatre Workshop, now sadly disbanded, which used to put on regular musicals at the Empire Theatre. I think I was about 4 when I started. I also danced at Jane Robson’s dance school in Blackhill from an early age. At secondary school in Wolsingham I got involved with Jack Drum Arts, which really opened me up creatively, giving an awkward teenager the skills and courage to be himself. I also went to Durham Gala Theatre Stage School, another institution sadly extinct, where I met life-long friends and made the decision to pursue a career in the arts. I hope children in County Durham these days have the same access to the arts that I did. I fear this is not the case, which is a crying shame. Regardless of whether I had gone into the arts as a career, the lessons I learned in self-expression set me up for life.

How do you spend your ideal weekend? 

Well, Sunday mornings should always start with an hour of 60s music (hint hint). Ideally, weekends are spent with good friends and good food, somewhere beautiful.
